Rare Coin Investments Vs. the Stock Market

There are many reasons why rare coins are better then stocks. But, I have found and pinpointed the top two reasons why rare coins are better. I feel that investing is useless if there is no potential in the investment. But many investments that have potential are usually riskier then other investments. So, even if an investment had potential, it may not be worth it if it was too volatile. This is where rare coin investments steps into the picture.

The first reason why coins are better then stocks is because of stability. There are many investment vehicles out there that can yield some hefty returns. But with all investments, the investor/investment manager has to weed out all the bad investments. They have to cut off as much risk as possible. If we look at coins, we can see that it is a very stable investment. Coins are not as volatile as stocks. It doesn't go up and down by the minute. Its' movements are a lot slower then stocks, but their movements are very predictable. The predictability is what makes it more stable. Because we know when it goes up and down, we can make confident decisions without risk or heavy losses. I don't think we can find any other investment that is more stable then coins.

There is an inverse relationship between risk and returns. The returns tend to be lower when you cut off the risks. Some of the safest investments aren't really worth it anymore because of their low returns. To counter this, investors usually diversify their portfolios. This allows them to cut off risk while improving their returns. But, with stocks, you have to buy enough of each stock to profit. And, you have to buy a lot of many different stocks to diversify. This is extremely costly and messy. With coins, you can buy just about any investment coin you like. You can easily diversify your portfolio by buying a different coin specimen each time you buy a coin. Your returns are never cut short, and you never lay too many eggs in one basket.

The second reason why coins are better then stocks is potential. The right coin never stops going up in value. This has been proven (so far) in historical coin reports. It's not like stocks where they can stop going up in value. And then the company has to split their stocks so that it can continually go up in value. But, if the CEO doesn't know when to do this, or does this at the wrong time, the stock may never make anymore sizeable gains. Furthermore, regardless if the stock splits or not, it doesn't mean that the stock will continually rise in value. The stock can easily go down in value because of bad or false news. And after this, the stock may take forever to recover. Or worse yet, it may never recover at all. Coins on the other hand, can never lose their value because of bad news. Their performance depends mainly on supply and demand. And with the ever diminishing supply, some coins never see a down turn because of weakened demand. At the very most, they might stay stagnant for a short period of time. They will continue to rise again after demand strengthens.

The unique characteristics of rare coins makes it the perfect investment. Furthermore, I don't think there is any other investment that can be diversified any further then coins. You could buy one example of each investment coin and never run out of coins to buy. It's ultra safe, it yields extremely high returns, and its' diversification easiness makes it an investor's dream. If you have not looked into coins before, now is the time to do so.

Basic Rules of Rare Coin Investment

A rare coin investment can be a satisfying and profitable enterprise. However, it is easy to get taken advantage or to buy unwisely. To sensibly pursue a rare coin investment, make sure your interest is real; rare coins seldom provide quick return. Deepen your knowledge of this investing opportunity; find and deal with reputable professionals; plan to buy quality coins and hold them; and, finally, get the coins in your possession, store them securely and insure them.

1 - Have Interest, Develop Knowledge
Investing in rare coins is best pursued by those with passion for that product. Quick returns seldom happen, so other pleasures should be considered. There is enjoyment in learning which coins have value and may appreciate; in searching for the coins once you have learned about them; and, of course, in finding a coin and paying the right price for it.

Before investing, there is a great deal of pleasure to be gained by reading about coin collecting, what makes a coin valuable and how to care for coins. Consider joining a local coin club and parlay relationships there into deeper knowledge.

2 - Deal with Reputable Professionals
Particularly if you are making a high-end rare coin investment, take the time to know professionals in the industry. Collectors almost always form an informal community, and they welcome new, interested parties. The Internet has opened many opportunities to communicate with dealers and collectors as well.

Always check the references and track record of anyone from whom you are considering buying. Never make impulse buys in a rare coin investment. It is possible to make a profit on your passion, but the opportunity should be approached with care and with the proper investment of time before any money changes hands.

3 - Buy the Best and Hold it
Experts estimate it takes about five years after purchase of a good, rare coin to achieve an acceptable rate of return on it. There are seldom shortcuts, but a good start is to buy the rarest coin you can afford, buy the highest quality coin you can find and buy coins that give you diversity in your portfolio.

This not only improves your chance of a good return in time, but the high-quality, rare coin is easily marketable should you need to sell. A word of caution when buying rare coins, or any coins for that matter, use your knowledge and relationships to avoid overpaying. Coins are attractive, and impulse buys are always a temptation. Remember that a rare coin investment is still a business decision despite the beauty of the product.

4 - Secure and Insure Your Coins
It’s wise to get your coins in your hands. Once you have taken possession of a coin, be certain that it is stored securely. There are many stories of coin owners misplacing valuable coins. Be sure to insure your collection as well. In addition to being easily misplaced, rare coins are a target for thieves.

Realm of the Coin - Ken Smaltz is a master collector--of customers

(FORTUNE Small Business) – In his quest to find well-heeled clients for his rare-coin business, Ken Smaltz Jr., 42, shows up in the most unlikely places, from baseball's spring training camps to New York City's Friar's Club, the legendary haunt of has-been entertainers. Last year the Zelig-like owner of K. Smaltz, his one-person firm in Garden City, N.Y., spent $15,000 traveling, including trips to trade shows, to buy and sell coins. He spent $10,000 to entertain clients and prospective customers.

Smaltz sees rare coins as more than just a schoolboy's fleeting obsession. With gold rising to a 16-year high, rare coins have appreciated 20% over the past two years. He claims that one of his clients bought an 1871 $20 Carson City gold piece in 1998 for $4,750; it is now worth $12,000, according to Coin Values magazine. "I'm trying to change the perception of coin collecting from just a hobby," says Smaltz.

Opening his business in 1997, Smaltz built sales to $1.5 million in 2004, up about 5% from the year before, and he says his firm is profitable. He gets a big chunk of business by going to trade shows, with the rest coming from client referrals, advertising, and networking. In 20 years, he says, he has never met another African-American coin dealer, which helps people remember him. "My uniqueness in this industry has been quite positive," he says.

Smaltz discovered his knack for selling rare coins through happenstance. At 21, having dropped out of New York University, he took a job in the shipping department of MTB Banking, a company that sells rare coins. Within two years he had worked his way up to a sales position. That led to more senior sales positions at other rare-coin companies around the country.

As his client list grew, Smaltz saw an opportunity to go out on his own. He got his big break when a former boss put him in touch with New World Rarities, a Long Island rare-coin and precious-metals company, where he worked as a salesperson and began to set himself up as a sole proprietor. He now operates his own business out of the headquarters of Eastern Numismatics, a rare-coin company that covers his rent, telephone, and shipping expenses in exchange for a percentage of each sale he makes. He pays for his own travel, entertainment, and supplies, such as the computer he bought last year. Smaltz tries to keep his fixed costs down. Last year he spent two months calling dealers around the country and combing the web to find a prized 1895 Morgan silver dollar in excellent condition. A client had gathered an almost complete set of the coins, which were minted from 1878 through 1921, and needed only that one to round out his collection. Because it was made differently from the others in the series, it was in hot demand. "They call it the king of the Morgans," says Smaltz. After weeks, he found the coin at a dealer's shop in Dana Point, Calif. He ordered it and sold it to his client for $139,750. His markup varies according to the time he spends looking for a coin, he says, noting that the industry average is between 10% and 25%.

To create buzz for his business, Smaltz has donated valuable coins to charity auctions and has designed his own commemorative coins. But what really makes his business tick is a reputation for delivering the exclusive goods in a timely manner, something Smaltz believes leads to repeat business and consistent profits. Gene Fox, a retired engineer from Joshua, Texas, started doing business with Smaltz around eight years ago when he ordered some historic silver dollars for his grandchildren. Since then he has purchased about 25 coins. "He's very reliable," says Fox, 73.

Smaltz hopes that recent world events will help him attract customers. "People are worried about the war in Iraq," he says. "Gold has always been considered a safe haven. And rare coins happen to be made out of gold." He repeats that line everywhere he goes, offering to let his prospects in on what he considers a secret: the investment potential of coins. "Nobody," Smaltz says, "really knows about this."

Why Coin Collection Will be a Good Investment?

I give you some examples from the coin market.

1) Last month the price of 5 Rs Tilak steel coin was sold at 100 Rs. But now it is selling for 150 Rs due to the scarcity of the coin. See the 50% jump in the price.

2) 5 Rs Cross symbol (2007 year) coin was sold for 50 Rs last year. Twelve months later, now the same coin is available for 600-700 Rs. If one bought atleast 10 coins last year for the total of 500 Rs, now will get 7000 Rs. See you may get upto 1400% profit within one year. Even bullish stock market also may not give that much of profit.

3) 1954 - One Rupee coin was sold for 120 Rs last year. Now it is available for 700-900 Rs.

4) Nethaji two rupee coin of 1996 sold for 1000 Rs before 3 months. But now available for 3000 Rs. Here the profit is 200% within 3 months. You can't imagine such a profit in any other investment avenue.

Due to the above examples, I am insisting that coin collection is not just a hobby. It will give you handsome of money in future.

5 Rare and Valuable US Coins

That you might find in your pocket or change jars

1943 Copper Penny

Coin: 1943 Copper Penny
Estimated Value: $10,000 - $100,000+

Background: Most circulating pennies at that time were struck in zinc-coated steel because copper and nickel were needed for the the war.

About 40 1943 copper cents are estimated to remain in existence, and only about a dozen confirmed to exist.

They were most likely made by accident when copper blanks remained in the press as production began on the new steel pennies.

In 2008, Steve Contursi sold a 1943-S authenticated copper wheat penny for more than $100,000 to a private collector. Contursi had bought the coin only a week earlier for about $72,000. Nice Profit.

How to spot it: The easiest way to determine if your 1943 cent is copper (and valuable) is to test it with a magnet. If it sticks to the magnet, it is a steel penny, and not valuable (but still pretty nifty).

If it does not stick, then you might have hit the jackpot...have a expert authenticate your coin, but be prepared for disappointment: there are probably many counterfeits of this coin. More info about 1943 Pennies on Wikipedia

1982 "No P" Dime

1982 dime

Coin: 1982 "No P" Dime
Estimated Value: $100+ (just saw one on ebay for $3000)

Background: Before 1980, dimes minted in Philadelphia didn't have a mint mark. Starting that year, a small letter "P" was placed on Philly dimes above the date.

In 1982 an error occurred when the mint mark was omitted from a small number of dimes, leaving them p-less.

How to spot it: 1982 dime, with no "p" above the date. Of course, this could be easy to fake -- an expert would need to authenticate the coin.

1955 Double Die Penny

1955 penny

Coin: 1955 Double Die Penny
Estimated Value: $300 - $25,000+

Background: Double dies are caused when from a misalignment during the production of a coin.

About 24,000 1955 double die cents were put into circulation.

In uncirculated condition, the 1955 Double Die wheat penny is worth over $25,000. Even circulated versions of the 1955 Double Die are worth $300-$1000+ depending on condition.

How to spot it: The doubling of the letters and numbers on this coin is pretty easy to see. Rare, but not too rare... these pop-up at auction every once and a while.

2001-P Double Struck New York Quarter

double struck quarter

Coin: 2001-P Double Struck New York Quarter
Estimated Value: $400 - $3000

Background: The coin is sadistic and is not satisfied being struck once. A production goof keeps the coin in the chamber for extra striking making a very odd looking coin.

How to spot it: Off center image doubling of Washington and the Statue of Liberty.

1965 Silver Dime

1965 silver dime

Coin: 1965 Silver Dime
Estimated Value: $9000+

Background: The official production of silver dimes were discontinued in 1964.

Beginning in 1965 dimes were made out of copper and nickel. A silver 1965 dime is a mistake (and a rare one).

Only a few have been found, but more are believed to still be in circulation.

How to spot it: The silver coin has a silver edge; the common copper/nickel coin has a strip of brown around the edge.

A silver dime weighs 2.50 grams, while a copper/nickel dime weighs 2.27 grams.

An introduction to US coins as an investment

Coin collecting in the United States became popular almost as soon as coins were first made. Although many of the early collectors were Englishmen, some of the founders of U.S. numismatics include Lonin G. Parmelee, Harold P. Newland and T. Harrison Garrett whose incredible collection was sold around the time the principle of U.S. Rare Coin Investments was making efforts at turning his own hobby into a profession in the 1970's.

Today, rare coins are considered sound investments and in fact have been featured numerous times in the Wall Street Journal, Barron's, Money Magazine, on CNBC, and numerous other financial publications. Investment professionals from Harry Browne to independent financial planners have recommended some portion of one's investment portfolio to contain precious metals and rare gold and silver coins. Some suggest as much as 25% of one's overall wealth be placed in a position of rare coins and precious metals. In other words, rare coins have been no secret to those "in the know".

Informed investors have long considered coins not only as a means for capital appreciation, but also as a way to secure long term retirement goals, establish a confidential low key way of protecting their own investment assets to balance out the fluctuations in dollar related portions of their holdings and to enjoy owning something they have learned that over time, would stay in demand, hence providing safety as well as possibly spotting and owing certain rare coins that have been for the most part undervalued, and subsequently realizing a higher demand thereby showing great profits when sold down the road.

Investing in rare coins up till the new wave of fresh investment dollars coming into the industry recently, was considered a long-term investment. Frankly, the investor should consider this approach as a means to a more diversified portfolio. Too often in the past, unskilled investors equated portfolios with stocks and bonds. However as seasoned investors have seen and as the modern portfolio theory has suggested, one should strongly consider investing in assets that can have a counter effect to the dollar and most other dollar related (and reported) securities. This approach "spreads out" one's portfolio and reduces risk. Take for example one who purchased gold, silver, rare coins and other forms of hard assets using this approach as well as a means to hedge against weakening trends in currency and securities markets. Even if the dollar related securities portion of the portfolio didn't perform well, the overall portfolio generally reacted favorably due to this diversification.

In today's atmosphere of uncertainty in the global economic climate, as well as changes in the US financial markets with regard to a variety of reasons, from uncertain tax consequences and changes, increasing reliance on foreign manufactured products, the seeming instability and somewhat wild fluctuations in the stock markets as well as what would appear to be a bottoming of interest rates, that today may represent one of the true windows of opportunity for beginning the formation of a rare coin investment portfolio, as well as the recommendations to those who are already involved and have a position in rare coins to take a more aggressive posture. Those who have coins, whether purchased or inherited should seek out expert advice now, and formulate an intelligent financial plan in which to capitalize on these changes in the economic atmosphere, thereby securing a more profitable and secure future in their own lives and the well being of their families.

ONLINE BUSINESS

You may be surprised to see the heading of this article. How online business came in a coin collection blog? Is the article owner wrongly put in this blog instead of online business blog?

No. I put this article only in the Coin Collections & Investments blog. Many of us thinking that coin collection is just a hobby. We can't expect more from a hobby. But there is lot of business potential is hidding in coin collection. It can be done by any housewives who wants to earn money while spending their life at their home or anybody who wants to earn extra money apart from their jobs or business or a student who wants to earn money without spending more time.

All you need to do is develop your knowledge about rare coins. Rare coins price will shoot up easily. But in a routine life, we exchange many rare coins without proper knowledge. If you realise that which all are having the quality to become rare coins and what all are scarce commemorative coins, then you can accumulate it from your routine life. It is like saving your saving amount in a little bank.

You can put your collections for sale through lot of online platform like ebay, quickr or olx. All the commemorative coins are going for many folds of their face value in ebay. If you have a 5 rupee coin, it will be sold for atleast 20 Rs. It can go to 500 Rs according to their scarcity. The return from the sale of the coin will be higher than any other returns like bank fixed deposit, equity investment or real estate. So, coin collecting is not providing you an hobby in leisure time, It also provide you good business opportunities while you sit at your home.

I will keep posting about the rare coins which one accumulate if they are very aware of the rare coins.

FAKE COINS

I recently came across coins with date of 1616 and also 1939 written on it! Apparently the faker forgot the period for which the East India Company ruled India. We know that 1616 was in the Jahangir era and the East India Company did not rule India then, though it did set up trade. And in 1939, we know very well that in 1939, George VI was the emperor of India and India was very close to getting its independence. So there is no way these coins had been in circulation in the East India company era, that is established beyond doubt. The deities on these coins are worshipped, but the East India Company never had any reason to mint coins having these deities on them , and never did so.

There is a big fake coin market in Johri Baazar Jaipur. Few years ago I purchased some coins which looked like Mughal era. There was a coin of Mughal king AZAM SHAH which I bought with few other coins. I showed that coin to Mr Shatrughan Jain of Twins Stamps & Coins Ahmedabad and Mr Avinash Ramteke of Nagpur. I was shocked that they told me it is fake. The original coin is rare and worth Rs 25000. Similarly I was again cheated when I purchased Tipu Sultan 2 Mohur silver coins and found that they were made of iron. There are British India coins Of the year 1939 which are also fake when you see that the king is GEORGE V or EDWARD VII. These fake coins are circulating in the market. The original coin of 1939 GEORGE VI IS valued between Rs 100000 to 150000.

If you guys are serious about coins then the first step would be to invest in a 'Krause Catalog' or some other good guide to coins. Start reading and you will find out all that is to know about coins. BTW Imsong, the hanuman, snake, monkey , Kali, etc etc coins of east india company are not coins but temple tokens and curios mostly manufactured in early 1900's and still being made for tourists who can be fooled easily. The East India company never minted any such coins!

These coins which have images of lord Hanuman & Rama are temple tokens and are known as Ram tankas. Those which bear the dates 1808 and 1818 are fakes and are abundantly available in India, the British never issued such type of coins. Talking about smoothness of coins, the fake coins which are made of silver are rough and have sharp edges ( you will find these in fake mughal & princely state coins and their weight differs either more or less than the original one ). These coins are made of different metals and some type of chemical treatment is done to make them look blackish and old. PLEASE REFER TO KRAUSE PUBLICATION BOOKS TO KNOW THE EXACT WEIGHT AND METAL OF COINS AND ALSO HOW THE COIN LOOKS , SO THAT YOU CAN COMPARE WITH THE COIN YOU ARE BUYING FROM THE COIN DEALER.

Never buy old coins from people who sell them on streets, because most of them are fake. Buy coins from a genuine dealer who has a shop and participates in coin exhibitions. If you have doubts about the genuinety of coins then go to a good reputed coin dealer and show your coins to that person, but also bear one thing in mind that if you have a rare coin and you don,t know anything about it the person you show your coins may say it is a fake and buy it from you at a low price. This thing happens, so before buying any coin study about that coin on the internet or refer to books which give you information about the coin you want to purchase.

If you want to share your experience or want more details about coins, please mail me to soselva@gmail.com
